Training for Beginners/New Volunteers in Elderly Sector (By ESN) at NVPC
I & Fion attended the ESN (Elderly Sector Network) Workshop organised by the NVPC. After we have registered, we will ask to choose the food for our lunch. There were choices of Chicken Rice, Nasi Lemak & Vegetarian food.
We were briefed by our SNH Senior - Edmund. After Briefing, our first game was the Ice Breaking. We mush finish filling up the form within the time given. We was ask to mix around with other participants & fill in those name who meet the following criteria given on the form. But one name can only appear in the form once & only standard handwriting.
The another activity was the friendship dance. The first round was totally in a mess because some of them including me cannot follow the steps. We only able to have a proper dance after a few rounds.
Other then activities, we also attended some lesson which are 1) Wheelchair training by our senior Inn Shyan, 2) Dialet U & I, 3) First-Aid Awareness & the last is the Sharing of Experience from Lim Seow Kuan.
In Additional, we will also given number ideas of recommended activities.

-Education Talk
-Board Games
-Jig-saw Puzzles
-Story Telling
-Lantern Making for Mooncake Festival
-Exercising (i.e: Stretching Out)
-Bazaar (i.e: Tikam Game)
Through this training, I get to know volunteer from other group during the two game (i.e MFT, All Saints, RJC Interact Club and etc) We get to learn some common hokkien conversation which we may use during our weekly servicing. They also teach us proper ways of using wheel chairs & common First-Aid skills.

Mooncake Festival Celebration (06-Oct-07)
This year Mooncake celebration event kick start with all event com members, volunteers and helpers assembling at SN kitchen, with knifes, chopping boards and gloves!
Instead of letting SN kitchen staffs to cut the mooncakes, peeling of pomelo, brewing of tea and the usual distribution to the elderly during tea break; the volunteers and helpers, for the very first time, took up this holistic job.
From the cheerful and happy looks from all elderly, nurses, helpers and volunteers, it is for sure that this simple chore has touched the hearts of many in the Home.
Meanwhile, at the other end stationed the event’s Gaming team, Décor team, Logistic cum sound system team members and performers, busy preparing their stuffs and rehearsing, in order to put up a good show for the beneficiaries.
Alas, with the arrival of SHARE beneficiaries, the program started off with good performances from our very own volunteer, Ah Hong, who did 2 fabulous mandarin songs (十五的月亮 & 只要你过的比我好), 2 lively dances done up by Honey’s young and sweet nieces, Hokkien & Teochew songs by Ah Ang’s friend and ‘乒乒乐’ (Matching games) conducted by our very own game masters, Jordy & Ah Teck.
From the happy expressions, swaying of bodies and applauses from the beneficiaries, the volunteers, helpers and organizing team are very sure that the efforts putted up has definitely reciprocated with gratitude!
What a tiring yet joyful event!!! ;P
Mooncake Fiesta
Kudos to the organizing team for this joyous celebration and to all the volunteers who aided in the preparation to make the event a success. Many thanks to Joanna for your willingness to participate actively even though it was your first day at the Home. My apologies for not being able to spend more time on orientating you about the Home due to the other tasks at hand. Hopefully you found what you wanted after spending a day at the SN Home. :)The event turned out nicely, no doubt. Upon hearing the rehearsal music before commencing the celebration, a few eager elderly beneficiaries couldn't wait and rolled in on their wheels!I was also quite surprized that a lot of the beneficiaries were quite happy and willing to pose for me when I asked for a shot. It means that they are starting to open themselves up and hopefully we can all take the initiative to accept their invitation to build closer bonds. The one performance I really liked were the songs that were belted out by the male singer (sorry, can't recall the name!). His ability to involve the audience in the performance is not easy and I hope we can all learn a trick or two from there. The other volunteers who joined in the event, do kindly share your opinions and experiences. You may have seen or experienced something that others did not. Let's share our experiences so that we can all learn from each other.P/S: Running around the whole building as appointed photographer is a sweat-breaking task. The next guy appointed, please wear singlet and shorts.Labels: celebration, elderly, festival, mooncakes, volunteer
The New Committee
Thumbs up to the newly formed committee. With the recent makeover of the website and the freshly introduced games and activities, volunteer business seems to be starting to boom. I even get calls from wannabe volunteers all the time while I was overseas! I can also see the elderly enjoying the activities and looking forward to our service each Saturday.Despite everyones busy schedules, let's hope that the committee continue to work closely together and meet our targetted objectives to bring joy to the elderly beneficiaries. Do delegate any task possible if it's all too taxing on an individual. I think the last thing we want to see is mentally burnt-out volunteers...Ultimately, if any team fails, we all fail as a committee. We still have a long way to go so keep up the good work!P/S: Please don't mind my seemingly relaxed attitude when it comes to Home service matters. The fact is I have never taken volunteering matters as a chore.Labels: volunteer
